Remote pregnancy and newborn monitoring for rural and informal settlements

No mother should be alone when a warning sign appears.

MotherLink connects a small home vital-sign device to the local clinic. It flags changes early, sends reminders and danger-sign messages in the mother's language, and shows the clinic team who needs attention first. A nurse or midwife always decides what happens next.

Illustrative check-in scores

Illustrative animation, not live data. Fictional people.
Original illustration: a home device linked to the clinic. Not a photograph.
What MotherLink does not do: it does not diagnose, replace a clinic visit, or share a mother's information without consent. Alerts go to a nurse, who decides.
If you or your baby feel very unwell, go to the nearest clinic or hospital now. Call an ambulance on 10177, or 112 from a cell phone.

Why mothers are missed

Long distances, costly transport and busy clinics mean warning signs can go unseen until they are emergencies.

Routine

Readings look normal. Reminders and encouragement continue.

Watch closely

Readings or answers are drifting. A nurse phone call is suggested.

Urgent nurse review

A danger sign or sharp change. The nurse is alerted first.
MotherLink produces flags for clinical review, never diagnoses.

How it works

1 Home device

Wearable or home kit records pulse, blood pressure and other readings.

2 Consent and privacy

Mother agrees first. Data is handled under POPIA.

3 Risk flag

Readings and history become a simple risk score.

4 Coaching

Reminders and danger-sign education, in her language.

5 Picture check

Mother can share a photo, e.g. swelling, for the nurse to see.

6 Clinic dashboard

Clinic sees who needs help first.

7 Nurse decides

Call, visit, transport, doctor, or no action.

The AI helpers

GPT-6 Luna

Flags risk scores from readings and history.

GPT-6 Sol

Writes reminders and danger-sign education in local languages.

GPT-6 Astra

Builds clinic risk dashboards.

Image 2

Supports visual symptom checks for the nurse to review.

Clinic nurse / midwife (mandatory)

Reviews every flag. Nothing is acted on without them.
Model names are as supplied and must be checked against current provider documentation. AI outputs here are simulated. Real use would need clinical validation, privacy review under POPIA and regulatory review (for example, health-device rules). Local-language messages need review by clinicians and native speakers. Cost: [add estimate range].

Research and evidence

Sources supplied in the brief. Replace with specific, verified articles before launch.

Pre-launch: none of these is a maternal-health source yet. Add specific health-department or peer-reviewed articles and open every link.

Where we could start

"I started EXF Production because too many mothers and children are only noticed once a problem has become an emergency. I want technology built here, for our communities, to give clinics an early warning and give every mother someone watching out for her. If MotherLink helps even one nurse reach one family in time, the work is worth it."

Languages

Reminders and danger-sign education in the mother's language. Choose a language: the home page switches too.

Draft translations. They must be reviewed by clinicians and native speakers before use with real patients. Xitsonga in particular needs careful review. Next steps: SMS, voice and pictures for mothers who cannot read.
